An industry newcomer to an industry leader

SWEEEP was founded by Patrick & Pamela Watts based on their experience in engineering technology and their commitment to the environment. They were aware of the impending EU directive on the disposal of WEEE and equally aware of the lack of a dedicated WEEE recycling facility in the Thames Gateway, close to London.

During the set-up phase of the company, Justin Greenaway joined the team. A keen environmentalist with a background in electrical retail, Justin had previously set up an early WEEE recycling pilot scheme and was at the centre of the evolving WEEE recycling framework in the UK. Highly regarded in the industry, Justin worked closely with the new Compliance Schemes who were very keen to follow best practice to ensure ethical processing of the WEEE they collected.

Launched on 1^st July 2007 (the day the WEEE Directive became law), SWEEEP Limited quickly made an impact on the WEEE recycling industry. This was largely due to the £5 million pound investment in one of the most sophisticated and environmentally friendly recycling plants in Europe.

This commitment along with over 40 years combined experience within its management team allowed SWEEEP to generate significant traction in WEEE processing from the main WEEE Compliance Schemes and businesses throughout London and Southern England.The company grew rapidly, employing 150 people to process over 3000 tons of WEEE per month and 3000 televisions (CRT’s) per day.

It was SWEEEP’s commitment to innovation and ethical approach that attracted the attention of global recycler Kuusakoski. In 2010 SWEEEP entered into a joint venture with Kuusakoski and the company was renamed SWEEEP Kuusakoski.

Our joint experience of several generations of highly qualified and motivated engineers along with a committed team means that SWEEEP Kuusakoski continues to lead the market, set best practice and promote ethical recycling of WEEE in the UK.
